Artist's Comments

Those of you that have been watching me for a long time may remember way back when, when I did Ronin's famous The Thinker in manga style. I said I was going to do a whole series of famous art in manga (FAIM). Well, I finally got around to doing piece number two. This is my manga rendition of the Mona Lisa. Hope you like.

I'm not happy with the eyes. I had no idea how to make the eyes look as cynical and despondent as the real Mona Lisa and still be in manga style. Any tips on how I could improve on my expressions in manga would be really appreciated.

I have no idea which famous artwork I should do next in the series. So I'm open to suggestions. Maybe Whistler's Mother? Anybody have any famous artwork you would like me to attempt?

Woah! haha that's awesome Cindy! I love it. I don't know if it's the humor or the actual artistic ability that I like the most. I actually think this looks better than the original.

Maybe if you placed the eyes a bit lower on the face it would satisfy you...since the eyes are place half-way down the face anyways.

Man, I love this. Auto fav in my book :)

Ok that's weird, I'm sure I replied to this and the reply even showed up and now it's gone. Either I'm losing my head or something freaky is going on. I guess I'll just have to try again...

I think you're right that the eyes need to be moved down a tad, or the forehead up a tad or something, but that wasn't what was bothering me. I just would have preferred to better capture the expression of the original as that is what really made it famous to begin with I think. Unfortunately, I didn't know how to do that and still make it distinctly manga.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the fav. I tried something different with the shading on this one. After the main colours were blocked in all the shading was done using airbrushing. I just had to airbrush the background and then I figured I might as well go all the way. I  airbrushing.

So, any idea what I should do next? I'm thinking one of Picasso's funky cubist people might be a lark...

I agree with debs, definitely better than the original :D

To answer your question about the eyes- I don't believe it is the eyes at all so much as the chin ;-) Great work - hilarous but at the same time well done :)

I really don't know what you should do next though... I'm out of ideas.

Any suggestions on a nice drawing pad that won't break my poor wallet? I may get myself one sometime - or beg for it for a birthday coming up =p

You're totally awesome Cindy

I'm not a huge fan of Picasso myself, but im sure you can make me into one. You should mess around with some more DaVinci and see how that comes out. :)

Drawing pad? As in paper, or electronic?

I"m not a Picasso fan either. Not at all! But it's funny enough on it's own so a manga version might really crack me up
